Patient Stories

Lisa's Story - a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

lisaLisa’s story is not uncommon. In 2010, Lisa “just couldn’t get over some flu-like symptoms” so her private doctor prescribed a 10-day course of antibiotics. But five days later she was feeling worse, couldn’t swallow, and would lose her balance if she bent over to pick something up.

“I knew there was something really, really, wrong, which quickly led to tests, a specialist, a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and a recommendation from a thoracic surgeon.” The surgeon said,” If it was me or my family member facing this I would go to Dr. Steve Lo at the Bennett Cancer Center.” Lisa made another call to meet Dr. Lo.

Not only was that advice and phone call life -saving, it was life changing. From the first day, Dr. Lo made me feel like I could beat this- and he was right. He spent all the time I needed talking through things, explaining things. The nurses were unbelievably caring and compassionate. And they took care of my family, too!
